My move across this big, wide, open, empty country - Part 3

Funny chinese translations

Today I went downtown with my aunt and her two kids. …There isn’t really a whole lot to tell, the pictures show most of it.
We went shopping too much, I just hate shopping …so that made for a pretty long morning. But in the afternoon we went to China town (funny translation…"public pay park"…insteady of…public parking. I love it.) which was interesting. It’s not nearly as big as the one in Toronto… but it’s the oldest one in Canada, apparently.
It also had a lot more shops, instead of food markets like Toronto’s does. So it was a good stroll.
Then we went to an underwater sea world thing, and there were lots of fish. I learned about fish, and cephalopods which was very neat. We also saw the important political buildings of victoria. So I had science mixed in with some politics. It was a good afternoon! But I’m super duper tired, and I’m staying at my aunt’s hotel for the night (probably not a good idea, i won’t get any sleep…they all snore and kick). We’re going up the west coast tomorrow, to the biggest douglas fir in Canada, and we’re apparently going to see sea lions and seals. So I’ll have lots of pictures tomorrow too.
(For people who are trying to phone me, the phone number I sent out to all my friends…isn’t my number… long story short, if you want to talk to me, MSN me or something, and I’ll have to call you on skype. or call my cell phone…(i dont have a new number yet, but will soon)…I’m not getting a land line.)
Giant Pacific Octopus
by Katie Kish on Aug.26, 2006, under Science
So today we went to the Pacific Undersea Gardens, which we thought held the largest octopus in the world. Turns out it holds the largest *species* of octopus. …I couldn’t take pictures because my flash bounced off the windows and made a huge glare, the night vision wasn’t working for some reason (the users fault, not the camera, likely.) and when taken with no flash, it didn’t work. Soooo I took a couple of videos of the octopus.
There were lots of pretty fish, and the cephalopodes were actually pretty cute, and it was neat to see them move. I had never actually seen any underwater…’creatures’ before. The sunflower starfish was really pretty, and apparently the one they had was the largest one in the world.
*sorry the videos aren’t all that good. the lighting was horrible, and its off of my digital camera that isn’t all that fantastic either. …but …its better than nothing?*
Linky-link

Because I’m lazy, tired, have a headache and am sitting in a hotel room being distracted by 3 other people…. I’m going to do an extremely half-assed post…of links. So here, are short sentences with links that I would have made real posts over had I the time to do so, and the energy.
First up! This blog has got to be extremely underrated, and will be added to my blog roll as soon as I …you know, stop being lazy. Wendy, I love you.
Lindsay posts a snipit that makes me hate George Bush even more than I ever thought I could have. I bought a shirt last week that says "American Psycho" and it has his face on it. It makes me smile.
A couple from Pandagon, the first makes me want to put over 40% of the people who took it into a nut house. And this post is just… so many different levels of sad and pathetic that I don’t even know where to start.
Bitch | Lab (good blog…btw) is helping a virgin get laid - *eeeye roll*
Annnd I think that’s it for now. …To come: Part 3 of the victoria adventures, octo-video, and a post about how much I hate old men that message me on IMs.
My move across this big, wide, open, empty country - Part 2

Flying, I hate it. I get nervous, I sweat, I get faint, and just…so many things could go wrong, and there is no where to run. (Today, a worker on the plane told us "Please, no smoking. If you are smoking, we’ll ask you to leave." it was pretty funny…) But there are 3 things that make flying worth it.
- Topography - I know that’s a bit geography nerdish of me to say, but it’s very true. The topography that you get to see is awesome! Stuff you would only see in text books! Like today I saw live braided streams…and got so excited. I was also teaching the kid beside me about clouds, who reported to his mom "those big ones, are cucumber-nimbous clouds!!" …:-/ … close enough, for a 6 year old.
- The way the land makes a quilt. I’ve been sleeping with the same quilt for about the past…I don’t even know. So I’ve grown fond of the quilt…very fond, and the way all the farms go together in the sky look like it, and it looks so cool.
- When the plane lands, all the kids scream and giggle and say "That was so cool!!!!" and all the old women then giggle and laugh at all the cute kids. …It’s amusing.
After I get off the second plane, I find myself standing in the middle of British Columbia. I’ll tell ya, I’ve never seen so many trees in all my life. The taxi driver that took me from the airport to the house was fantastic. He told me all about the city, and the university… gave me tips on how to get around and everything.
Now, I am at my new house!! In my new r o o m! I was really excited at first. But then realized how …suburban the area is, and how far away the school is from the house. I also found out that downtown, isn’t much of a downtown. Victoria…isn’t really a city at all. Which is pretty dissapointing. But I met the son’s of the guy I’m renting from, who live upstairs, their names are Matt and Fraser. I know nothing about Matt really, but Fraser is an engineering physics major at UBC.
My room is in the basement, and there are 3 other rooms down here, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen and a laundry room. It’s actually a lot like a suite styled dorm. So it’s a pretty good set up. Fraser said the other three roommates are really great, and that it’ll be a lot of fun. They’re all moving in next week.
There are a *ton* of rabbits on campus though. Like, I saw 17 sitting around in a field which was pretty cute… and there are a lot of trees on campus. I plan on going to the campus tomorrow and finding all the buildings I have classes in. If I don’t I’ll be a lost cause on the first day of classes.
So here I am… as Andy said in his last comment, blogging across the country. (Soon the world??? Probably not…) I’m hoping things pick up here in BC, I was so excited to come for so long, and now…its just blllah. I’ll have to wait and see… ….What I really need now though, is a bike.
My move across this big, wide, open, empty country - Part 1

To begin with I thought that my flight was at 12, but it was
at 11 30, but that really didn’t make a difference, I got there on time. Security was nothing to get through. They did however manhandle my laptop which I wasn’t really happy about, but I understood…*sigh*. Samie was there to see me off too, which was really nice. My mom nearly cried, but didn’t!! So proud of her!! (But, she is also coming to visit in a little less than a month. So It wasn’t the *big* good bye yet…)
I got through security, and waved to my fan club and went to board my plane… my ticket said that it was going to be boarding at gate C50, so I made
my way down the long and seemingly endless terminal, only to find that the area
for C50 was completely empty.
I freak out…because that’s what I do best. I freak out, and then I think rationally. I call my mom all frantic and *then* have the sense to go look at the board where the
boarding stuff is listed and simply find that my flight has been moved to C26,
no biggie, I get there just in time.
The flight was long (well, only 4 hours, Calgary
but that was long enough.), but there were little TVs on the back of all the chairs. So I got my fill of Judge Judy and CNN…and my fill of the little girl who was sitting beside me. (I found it rather distrubing that the mother was playing "Eye spy with my little eye" with the little girl, only becaue the girl actually had one really deformed, small eye.) I get to the city of
A horrible meal at Manchu Wok, a shockingly low number of only 8
cowboy hats, the most dissapointing Discovery World store ever and an indoor smoking room later…and I realize, there is probably
wireless web. I take out the lappy and there I go. Set for my 2 hours. So within the next 3 hours I’ll be landing in Victoria, my new home. …It’ll be a mission to actually find the house that I’m supposed to be living in. I’m sure I’ll have plenty of interesting things to say, so more to come when I hit the
province I *actually* want to be in.
