What occupies my time…

Written by Katie Kish in Books

Believe it or not I don’t actually sit on my computers *all day*… I spent a lot of today sitting outside in the back yard (that over looks the Haro Straight and some pretty mountains) reading. So I thought I’d do a nice little list of what I’ve read in the past 3 weeks… that didn’t *have* to be read for school.

Today I finished Watership Down by Richard Adams. Honestly, the only reason I read it is because I’d like to think that the bunnies all over my campus can talk. It’s actually really good. It has a fantastic interpetation of realism… that you wouldn’t think would get portrayed with talking bunnies.

I read Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond last week sometime. All I have to say about this one, is that if you don’t have to read it - don’t. Like, its no Da Vinci Code, but it’s also no 1984. I wish I would have spent that time studying for my classes.

Next up, Natural Capitalism. I dont know what it is with me, I *know* I hate everything about reading and making myself involved in economics, yet not only did I read Natural Capitalism, I also read Freakonomics. I will admit, for economics books, they’re pretty decent… this coming from the girl who bashed her head against her desk during every single grade 12 economics class swearing never again to deal with economics. Ever.

I *finally* got around to reading The Selfish Gene and feel no more enlightened about life. It was really great to read some of Dawkin’s work (I never had before, strangely)… and it had some really really interesting insights and information, but I think I set the bar too high for this one. I expected more. But… it was worth the time to read it.

Chasing Ghosts was probably one of the better one’s I read this month. Majikthise/Lindsay did a post about it, I’ll just repost my comment here, it really holds everything that I thought about the book…

I just finished reading it this week too. There were two things he said in the book that stood out beyond all else.

"If we stay it will be bad; if we leave it will be bad."
"it’s like we’re pouring water on Gizmo."

The amount of enemies that they’re making in there is making it
impossible to leave, and even worse to stay. However, the book was
entirely based on complaints with little to no solution… (I suppose I
shouldn’t expect him to come up with any solutions though…) It was
probably the best book I’ve read on the war, which could be entirely
because it was the first time I had seen Al Qaeda and jihadists being
compared to Gremlins. I’ve also never read anything that articulates so
well the terrifying and hard position that the soldiers find themselves
in.

It really was… the best book I read this month.

And finally, I read No Logo by Naomi Klein. I started it about 2 years ago. hahaha… yeah, and finally finished it a couple weeks ago while chilling in a feild with a bunny on campus. (They seriously just hop right up to you. It’s so cute.) It didn’t take me that long because it’s a bad book or anything, it just took me that long because…I forgot about it for about a year, and then again for another year! It’s actually a fairly decent read.

Up for October is War and Peace, Crime and Punishment, Beyond Good and Evil, Century Rain, Gender on Planet Earth, Art of War and How Much Is Enough? Usually I make a list like this (War and Peace is ALWAYS on the list) and 1/2 of them don’t get read, but are replaced by more books that I didn’t intend to read. The security gaurds at Chapters get annoyed with me. I pick up a book and end up standing in the same spot for about 3 hours while I read it… they always ask me to buy it, sit down or leave. hahaha.

**just as a note - the new header will not be staying, i promise.I know its sort of hard on the eyes, and sort of ugly, but… whatever. My brother is supposed to be working on a new one for me, hopefully he actually does that. If not, my usual image maker got into a motorcycle accident, so I’ll be waiting for quite some time. (he’s fine, a couple broken ribs and a few stitches on the head, nothing too serious, but he’s…in bed and doesn’t plan on moving for a while.)

So this girl, Michelle, got this maybe fake, maybe not fake picture posted of her, and for some reason… people care. Someone in a Majikthise thread said it best:

More to the point, who cares?

Indeed. I just thought I’d post about it, to just, say…I think the fact that people actually care is supremely stupid.
Honestly.
It’s just as stupid as the Jessica thing when people realized she has boobies. The more people blog about stupid shit like this… the more I want to just go read a book instead of contributing any further to blogs, and reading them.

(I know, I’m being a bit hypocritical by posting about it, but…I had to post it to say what I think is stupid, right?…right.)

I can’t even express the amount of stupidity the whole ordeal is amounting to. Blah. There are better things in the world to talk about, think about, and spend time blogging about.  Like this. Because this is just ridiculous and, well, wrong. Why is it wrong? Ann expresses it more clearly than I ever could.

And I think that gets to the heart of what’s unsettling to me about
this campaign. I don’t like the implication that certain parts of
women’s bodies are "worth saving" because they’re sexy. Boobiethon is
sending a message that breast cancer should be stopped because it
claims beautiful breasts as its victims– not because it’s a horrible
disease that’s killing women. I’d almost prefer a website that featured
women naked from the belly button up, and showed their faces. Because
at least then you can see that this disease affects real women, not
just disembodied breasts.

People are getting more stupid as each day passes.

Mermaids

Mermaid_vagina_1

A mermaid, or a merman, or to be gender neutral merfolk,  have the head and torso of a human being, and the tail of a fishy. The first mermaid came to be when she was in love with a human shepherd, and somehow ended up killing him. Ashamed of her actions she took a dive in to the water, which would not fully consume her beauty, therefore she was turned into a mermaid.

But to answer our friends question to ariel…

Females have human internal reproduction organs; however the vagina is slightly shorter, and the common urogenital opening (the urethra merges with the vaginal canal near the opening) is at the front. The opening can stretch as much as a human vaginal opening; mermaid babies are born live (as opposed to hatched from eggs). A clitoris (which is the same color as the tail) is slightly below the
urogenital opening, and an anus is above the urogenital opening. Mermaid vaginas are slightly smaller than human ones (since male mermaid penises are smaller, explained below), so they tend to be more sexually satisfying to human males.

Males do have a penis, but it is almost as small as a human female clitoris and is the same color as the tail; it is hardly visible (this is the only plausible explanation to why no one has ever seen a penis on any of the male mermaids). It is used for urination, as well as sexual intercourse. The testicles are
inside the tail, as opposed to the pelvis, since they require a slightly lower temperature to function properly (the human and pelvis part is warm-blooded, but the tail is cold-blooded). The anus is above the penis.

I wanted to date Screech. I know… …just…I know.

On a totally unrelated note…my boyfriend hates me tonight

BF: will you please, just…for one night pretend that you like my band?
ME: I do like your band! It’s good!
BF: …No you don’t. I don’t care if you like us, just …at the show act like you like us, please?
ME: I really do like your band!
BF: What’s my bands name?
ME: …. Dino-Punks?
BF: What? Where did you even come up with that?
ME: …just because i dont know your bands name doesn’t mean I dont like your band….
BF: Kian, you brought a book on the politics of Iran to our last show…
ME: I can listen and read!
BF: You had your IPod headphones in…
ME: oh…you saw that eh?

hahaha …I’m a jerk. Just, as a side note, his band really is pretty good. …I just, had a lot of work to do that night…….

Update:
i feel like I shouldn’t make another post just to accomodate to my druken desire to share tonight’s story wtih you all. photo style. First, boyfriend called at midnight:

Boyfriend: get ready. we’re going to a punk show at the hostel
kian: …’k.

But…obviously got back up to come on her computer and check blogs…thinking that for some reason there would be interesting things happening at 5 am. (But I guess with all the blogs I read, it’s 8 am, but really… it’s Saturday.) I am very happy, I now have 622 songs on my new computer…and plenty lined up to download. …I was excited to come home to find a nice selection including some Sarah Vaughan, A Tribe Called Quest, Deltron 3030, Sleater-Kinney and Run DMC. My camera has 190 pictures on it, and I think about 40 are of the show…which you can’t see because…they’re nothing, really…the other 150 are of me. hahahaha. shit.
