Posts Of Interest

Posted by: Katie Kish In: Blogs

Soooo, a bunch of people will have heard about my blog at the conference this weekend… and they’re going to want to be pointed in the direction of a couple posts:

- Why Atheists Annoy Me: The post that PZ linked to which resaulted in his little minions flocking over and attacking the place

- Full Frontal Reviewed: I can’t find the original post when Jessica Valenti first started spouting her pure disliking for me. This post, however, was one of the ones that she wasn’t too happy about. I also didn’t speak too highly of her here… Aaaaand pretty much every feminist on the blogosphere hated my “Making Feminism Inclusive” post…

- The Skatje thing. Why she wants to punch me… this one is going to have to happen in a few parts. Here is the original post that started everything, called Long Distance Relationships and Love. Skatje responded to the post by calling me a slut. It was never resolved and she’s hated me every since.

I finally read the PZ one. I agreed with much of what you had to say, though I love Dawkins, Dennett, and Harris. I noticed you didn’t mention any beef with Dennett.

Some of what you say I found simply insightful, like about how we should structure our lectures.

And that which I disagree with you on, I celebrate our disagreements in a spirit of free inquiry.

I can’t speak for Katie, but people I respect who are familiar with Dennett (which I’m not) and who are against new atheism for the same reasons Katie and I are say that he’s better, in the sense that he understands the broader political issues better than the other three.

Dennett is definitely easier on religion in “Breaking the Spell” where he says he only fights against the “toxic” forms of religion, and advocates required comparative religion classes early in education for children as a kind of “innoculation” against the toxic forms of religion.

Though in his other books, generally ignored by the secular movement, “Consciousness Explained,” “Freedom Evolved,” “Darwin’s Dangerous Idea,” “Kinds of Minds,” and others Dennet point by point makes the notion of believing in any of the basic tennets of any of the theistic religions sound so irrational as to be ridiculous. Though he never calls religion out directly, just little things like existence of the soul, for example.

yeah, skatje moved her site somewhere i think.

i think that i like dennett more than the others. to be out right honest, i haven’t read anything of his. i guess i should get on top of that before i push on atheism too hard - maybe he’ll be the one guy i can relate to. …which would certainly be nice to find.
