This is my third summer working for Smurfit. They are bascially a company that specializes in corrugated packaging (aka, a box factory). The factory I work in is in Etobicoke, it’s about a 15-20 minute drive from where I live.
It’s a pretty decent job for a student - if you are just looking to make easy money and not be completely satisfied with your job. I make 15.01/hour, and am just a general labourer. This includes, helping with feeding boxes into machines, getting bundles ready to go off to customers, going through non-comformities and such . . . It’s physcially demanding, but keeps me reminded of why I’m in school in the first place.
I really like a lot of the people that work there - it doesn’t hurt that a lot are Newfies <3 It’s mostly a male-dominated environment, but there are more and more women coming in. Which is great. As of right now I’m the only female student working …. but I’m sure that’ll change as the summer goes on.
This summer I’m working there for 4 months - which is double what I worked the previous 2 summers… so I’m sure that in about a month or two I will be back with some horror stories of how much I just want the summer to be over and school to start up again … But as of right now, Im just enjoying my time off (from school that is)
Last week I was on days (7am to 3pm). I work Monday-Friday, unless they ask for overtime. Which they did this week. I said yes even though I really didn’t want to work on Saturday, but I usually get bumped by someone who has more seniority than I do … but it didn’t happen. So at 6am on Saturday I went in for a 6 hour OT shift - which was rough since it was my friends 20th birthday the day before .. Uff
I’m on nights this week - 11pm to 7am, my favourite shift
so in two hours time I will be getting ready to go into work. Oooo Joy! This also means that I worked EVERY day this week, but that I will also get off at 7am on Friday for the long weekend! Whoooop
