I’m on a Mac - but that’s not what I wanted to announce. I wanted to direct everyone to this post at Appletree - not because of the post, but because of the first comment where Gordo eats the posts and says almost everything I’ve been saying about the feministing girls for ages. What do they do, really? A lot online. …But not much else. Which is dissapointing, because they have such power to be able to do a lot - but they don’t do anything. For shame.
I have a class, I will rant more on this and my cultural geography class later - but I would like to boast that I just did a kick ass radio show. Once I get it up online I will post it for everyone to listen to - because it was good shit. Mostly because of the other girls I had on helping! Woow!
Thanks for the link. I don’t have a problem with Feministing per se, but I think it’s a real stretch to complain about being excluded from a movement that you’ve made no attempt to join.
If the movement doesn’t exist beyond NOW, then being active in your local chapter is a requirement for being taken seriously within the movement. If it’s larger than that, then Katha Pollitt is right, and women who feel excluded from NOW have to start their own organizations.
And frankly, I was surprised that the TPM Cafe even picked up Jessica’s piece in the first place, as it was filled with attacks on mainstream feminists that were based only on vague anecdotes. It’s virtually fact-free, save for a few “this happened to a person I know…” and “it has been said…” assertions.
In other words, Jessica used the same tactics that the wingnuts have been using against feminism and other progressive movements for decades. Using these tactics, one can make ANY organization or movement seem exclusionary.
If we don’t insist on intellectual rigor, then we become nothing more than the flip side of the right-wing demagogues.
