Full Frontal Indeed

Jessica is coming out with a book which has been titled Full Frontal Feminism, there has been some controversy arising in the comment thread about the title of the book, but mostly about the picture that Jess is using for the front cover:
There have been a variation of criticisms for the cover. The most interesting is Nubian’s dislike not only of the naked female body on the front but the naked white female body. The more I thought about it, the more that point actually becomes my main focus of concern as well. The nubster makes an interesting point
as feminists,
weyou guys are always up in arms about how
women’s bodies are protrayed, and to go and reproduce those same images
is ridiculous. is this what feminism is these days? is that what white
feminism is these days?
True enough. It is interesting that we advocate to love our bodies and to get excited about being who we are - but then a guide on why feminism matters has an airbrushed modelish body on the front of it.
I personally, couldn’t care less what the cover looks like. I’m really anxious to read the book and to find out what areas Jessica gets into and how to has decided to approach them. But since we’re all getting pissy about the cover, I might as well too.
I think the title is stupid. But, I’ve heard that she really didn’t have much choice but to just go with this title. Fair ’nuff. Then the picture basically just depicts the title, thus… I think it’s stupid too. Personally, if there were two books sitting on a shelf, and one was Jessica’s book and the other was something with a group of ethnically diverse women all shooting the finger or doing something… more edgy …(edgy is definitely *not* the right word here, but whatever) I wouldn’t even look twice at Jessica’s book. It honestly looks like a really immature guide to feminism that is going to just say "ya! don’t settle!" … "well no shit." (I actually fear that this is exactly what the book is going to be about. …Little to no theorizing and more like a 101 book.)
So I’m a little flip floppy on the whole thing. I can see Nubian’s point about the lack of ethnicity, I can see other people’s points about it using sex to sell the book but I also just look at it and say … Guys, shut the fuck up. Its a book about feminism. And it sort of just brings up my big pet peeve when it comes to liberals… the amount of bickering that happens within the liberal community at a whole is almost more than the the bickering that happens between liberals and conservatives. How are we supposed to unite as a unit if we just keep stabbing each other?
Anyway, that is all.

I love the idea of a cover with a whole slew of diverse women giving the finger. If Jessica’s book does well, perhaps the second edition! (Hell, maybe I’ll write my own book and use that for the cover, if you don’t mind - I’ll credit you for the idea of course.) I know feminists who wouldn’t have the torso covered book in their house, but would love a cover with a bunch of uppity women speaking out.

Well, I just think there should be SOME sort of diversity on it. From talking wtih girls in my women’s studies classes, the black girls in our class were pissed that feminists are always portrayed, not just as hairy and man eating, but also white.
I wouldn’t mind you using that cover at all. i’ll never have the patients to write a book that will be worth publishing.
