Lecture/Seminar - Women Confronting Globalization: Cultural Resistance, Fair Trade, and Human Rights
Description:
Cecilia Santiago Vera, a social psychologist from Chiapas, Mexico, will discuss her work which is focused primarily on gender and multicultural studies and strengthening the community. She has worked with displaced populations, especially with women survivors of the Acteal massacre, people in prison, and indigenous communities that live in violent contexts. Cecilia collaborates on the Psychological Project in Chiapas, a Mexican NGO that works to develop psychological interventions in populations experiencing human rights violations to take back the resources of the community. Mujeres por la Dignidad (Women for Dignity)-Participating via video message, Mujeres por la Dignidad is a cooperative of several hundred Zapatista indigenous weavers in Chiapas, Mexico. Beautiful hand-made textiles for sale to benefit Mujeres por la Dignidad and solidarity organizing in the US.

This is a memorial on Violence Against Women. Originally established to memorialize the 14 female victims of the Montreal Massacre, it has since grown to incorporate all different types of violence against women. This year’s ceremonies will feature 5 speakers, the Philomela Women’s Choir, a candle-lighting ceremony and a moment of silence in remembrance. This event will occur from 11:30-12:20, during a one-hour period in which all classes at the University are cancelled due to a Senate mandate.
