I wish I didn’t care…

Posted by: Katie Kish In: Rantage| Web/Tech

Well, I don’t really care, but sometimes, things are just silly.

Facebook changed a little bit… all the things that were in the left hand column are now at the top… and now on the side you can be brought to the latest updates by your friends in the categories you see. … That’s not what I find silly. I really don’t care, some people are starting groups “bring the old facebook back” …seriously, hardly anything has changed.

What I do find incredibly silly/stupid/pointless/a bit much is that you can text updates to your profile via your cell phone. In fact you can do multiple things from your cell phone…

Seriously, have “social networking” sites got so ridiculous that now when we’re out in public having real social contact that we much keep our virtual contacts updated and aware? And hey - I know I’m not innocent, I check facebook a couple times a day. But I know some people who check it every time they sit down at a computer. They talk about it when they’re out in public. They recognize people in person that they have never met before because they have seen the other person on a facebookpage somewhere.

Granted… I have connected with a lot of people I haven’t seen in over 6 - 8 years, and people I probably never would have been able to connect with before are on there too. But really, I think I would have survived without having contacted those people. The fact of the matter is - the people I interact with the most on Facebook are people who I see almost every day anyway, or am already really good friends with from back home.

But anyway I just think facebook is getting a little bit stupid. How about going across the hall to see your friend? Or calling your friend? Or going out for coffee? …I haven’t actually heard Sam’s voice… probably since Christmas, because we MSN/Facebook each other instead.

I already hate it enough when people are over hanging out, or out at dinner and they get interrupted by a text message or a phone call on their cell. So they have to stop talking with me or the group we’re with to attend to their electronic device. Chances are, it’s not all that important. “But katie, you have a cell phone!” ask anyone who knows me - it’s rarely, if ever, on. The last time I actually used it was when I was in Seattle a while ago - and that was to call Ashley to let her know I was okay and to call my mom when I thought I was going to die on the ferry.

I know what you mean though, I made Torrie put her cell phone away last night when we were out for coffee because she kept texting this guy . . not cool, Torrie, not cool.

You forget what her voice sounds like? She has a radio show. Or 2.

Katie your best friend doesn’t listen to your radio show?

Even *I* listen to your radio show! (I’m listening right now. And its not even you talking. …Someone talking about not being able to practice spirituality in Canada. As mentioned she teaches women’s studies with a numer of students who know little about Canada’s colonization and who minimize the influence of racism in Canada’s history… Im just typing what she’s saying.)

The phone thing really pisses me off. I was having lunch once with my brother and his wife, and he pulled out his phone and started to make a call.

I told his wife that I wasn’t going to put up with that level of rudeness, stood up, and took the bus home. You can bet that he never did that again.

I see you deactivated your facebook! I thought that was illegal. Even in Canada.
