Wiki-wiki-wiki-wikipedia

(the title is intended to be said as if you were scratching a record…Brother Andy…i know you’re doing the hand movement and saying it.)

A TA for one of my classes posted this article today. I guess a few people in the class had used Wikipedia to site a lot of their information. The topic was religion, and from what I’ve read most of the wikipedia entries on religion are reliable and have solid information. However - if the information is true, it won’t be hard to go and find it on an acedemic website of some sort. I think wikipedia is great, I go on it to read about all sorts of things. But I would *never* be stupid enough to site it in an acedemic essay. Some people are just… idiots.

Citing Wikipedia is generally not a good idea, but you can go to the relevant articles to cull references.

If you want to cite an encyclopedia directly, you should cite Uncyclopedia, which Wikipedia shamelessly parodies.

we’re just told not to cite encyclopedias…period. At least that’s what I was told in all of my classes so far.

I was never told anything about citing encyclopedias. Maybe it was just taken as common sense that citing Wikipedia is not a good idea.

(…I’m a confused puppy…are you online somewhere? i want to talk to you…)

My poli sci teacher first semester said not to use them only because they weren’t secondary or primary material generally. And my zoology teacher (who..was a whacko) said they were to general or something like that.
Our geology teacher just said “use an encyclopedia, and I’ll fail the paper.” she didn’t really give a reason or anything.

I also figured not citing wiki was a common sense thing to do. People do it on the discussion boards all the time, but I think that’s perfectly fine… but in their essays?..nah.

I never knew what Wikipedia was until Grade 12 philosophy class when Mr. Smith was said something along the lines of “cite wikipedia and you’ll fail”

Mr. Smith also said it was run entirely by guys that are tripped out on acid 24/7.
Mr Smith made stuff up. All. The. Time.

I had no idea what Wikipedia was till I found an electoral systems site that linked to its article on Condorcet, back in early 2003.
